BACKED BLADE: in stone toolmaking, a small blade with one edge blunted by further chipping along one edge. This retouching technique was used so that it could be fitted snugly into a haft, to provide a fingerrest, or so that it could be held in the hand without cutting the fingers. [backed knife]
